Frequently Asked Questions

What is "direct specialty care"?

Direct specialty care is an emerging type of patient care that puts patients in direct communication with their specialist doctor. At Minerva, this means you may contact Dr. Raverty about your symptoms and needs related to your qualifying condition at any time and receive a timely response. Your questions and concerns may be addressed via message, phone call, telemedicine visit or in-office visit. You and Dr. Raverty will work together to find the best approach that fits your needs and your schedule. For more information about how direct specialty care works, please visit the DSC Alliance website.

What patients do you treat?

At Minerva, Dr. Raverty treats patients with chronic neurologic conditions involving the brain and spinal cord. This includes multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and other progressive neurologic disorders. Our goal is to maintain function and improve quality of life, regardless of level of impairment or prognosis. Please see Who We Treat for additional details.

Do I need to be "disabled" or use a wheelchair to become a Minerva patient?

Not at all! At Minerva, we strive to meet you where you are. Whether you are newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis or have been living with a spinal cord injury for decades, the goal remains the same: personalized care designed to maintain function and improve quality of life.

How do I contact Dr. Raverty for care?

Patients enrolled in Minerva Rehabilitation Medicine clinic will be given options to contact Dr. Raverty via medical messaging, text messaging or direct phone call via secure channels that are provided during the first clinic visit. Whether you have a question on a Monday morning or a new symptom on a Saturday, Dr. Raverty will respond promptly and arrange for additional care based on your needs.

What if I need care after hours?

We understand that people with chronic, complex neurologic conditions may experience new symptoms or concerns at any time, including outside of normal clinic hours. Our response to these situations is what makes Minerva different: free and open communication with your doctor when you need it, typically within a few hours of your first message. Dr. Raverty will discuss your options for emergent concerns at your first consultation visit to ensure that you have flexible options and and understand who to call when you have concerns or questions.

Can I only be seen in your Lake Elmo office?

We understand how challenging it can be to arrange travel for those with neurologic conditions. Your first visit will take place in our Lake Elmo office so that Dr. Raverty can properly examine you in the clinic setting. After that, you may receive care via video or phone visits, messaging or in office if you prefer.  In select circumstances, in-home visits may be available as well. This can be discussed with Dr. Raverty at your initial consultation appointment.

Why don't you take insurance?

Traditional insurance-based care models are increasingly limiting for patients and clinics. Visits are short and do not allow for the time and attention that is needed to understand and respond to rehabilitation needs for patients in real-time.  Additionally, each contact with the clinic may incur separate co-pays or facility fees. Direct specialty care eliminates this barrier between patient and physician without the need for additional hidden fees or scheduling limitations.

What do Minerva consultation and membership fees cover?

The initial consultation fee accounts both the initial appointment time as well as care before and after the visit. Dr. Raverty will work with you prior to the appointment to gather medical records to build a foundation of information from which to get to know you. The initial appointment will be at least 2 hours in duration, longer if necessary, and aims to get to know you, your personal history, neurologic condition and associated symptoms, as well as discuss overall treatment goals and plans. The initial fee also covers Minerva clinic care for the next 30 days, so follow up questions or questions are not limited to your appointment in the clinic. If you find Minerva to be a good fit for you, you may keep your enrollment in the clinic with a monthly fee which covers all Minerva clinic care for that month. Indeed, these fees are higher than many insurance co-pays for a clinic visit, but they also cover much more than you would find in a traditional 30 minute clinic visit in an insurance-based model. Please see our Pricing Structure page for additional information.
